My grandfather never knew the Hobo Code. He couldn’t have—he flunked out of school after third grade, unable to speak English, never learning to read. But the men passing through during the Great Depression knew who he was. They carved marks into his fence, symbols other hobos would recognize: “This is a safe place. This man will help you.” He never once asked for that recognition. He simply gave—meals, tools, time, compassion. Watching him shaped everything in me: how I served in the Army, how I now serve business owners and families through my work. Like him, I help those overlooked by the system. Like him, I believe you do the right thing quietly—and you do it again tomorrow. His fence may be gone, but I like to think I’m still building signs. Still carrying the message he left behind: “You’re safe here. I’ve got your back.” I think of him every day.
