Rosario L. Thomas, Sr. is a highly respected U.S. Army Veteran whose legacy of service continues well beyond his distinguished military career. Serving from 1996 to 2011, Sergeant Thomas demonstrated exceptional leadership across multiple global assignments, including deployments to Iraq, Germany, Korea, and Bosnia. During Operation Iraqi Freedom Five, he led over 14 vehicle recovery missions under high-stress and hazardous conditions. He was consistently recognized for his excellence and integrity, earning three Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, and four Army Good Conduct Medals. His leadership and operations oversight were instrumental in the accountability of over $200 million in equipment and the welfare of his fellow soldiers.
Following his retirement from active duty, Mr. Thomas transitioned to higher education, where he continues to advocate for veterans as the Veterans Affairs and Financial Aid Specialist at Southern Union State Community College. In this role, he is the cornerstone of support for student veterans and their dependents, ensuring accurate certification and timely distribution of benefits. He maintains the college’s VA Policy and Procedure Manual, monitors regulatory changes, and advises on both educational benefits and financial aid. His work empowers veterans to succeed academically and personally.
Rosario’s commitment to service is equally evident in his community involvement. He has volunteered with "Our House," offering physical fitness and academic enrichment for K-5 students, and has served as a youth speaker and Vacation Bible School teacher across several churches. His impact spans education, mentorship, and spiritual development.

He currently serves on the board of Village Friends of Auburn and as the Southern Representative for the Alabama Veterans Affairs Association He is also a member of Leadership Lee County. He obtained his Yoga Teacher Certification and teaches yoga at the Yoga Room Auburn. In working with veterans in the community, Rosario gives them a resource through yoga, give them a connection to their inner peace, in mind, body and spirit.
Rosario shares a fulfilling life with his wife, Aletia Thomas, and together they nurture a loving family that includes three children and three energetic grandsons. Rosario’s dedication to education is evident in his academic pursuits. He earned an Associate of Science degree from Southern Union State Community College before advancing to Huntingdon College, where he proudly obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He has been in his current position as the VA specialist at Southern Union for nine years.
